REDLANDS, Calif. - With a busy Homecoming Weekend underway at Cal Lutheran, the Regals soccer team hit the road and spoiled Redlands own Homecoming with a 2-1 victory at Farquhar Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, CLU has now registered seven straight victories and are undefeated in their last nine games, having gone 8-0-1 over that stretch.
Sarah Wardle opened the scoring for the Violet and Gold within two minutes from the start of the game. Kali Youngdahl found Wardle whose shot hit the cross bar and skipped into the back of the net.
In the 17th minute, holding on to a 1-0 lead, Bri Pinal created space for her shot that lined over the goalie's head for the score. Pinal's goal makes it her second straight game with a goal after recording her first of the season in last week's 2-0 victory over La Verne.
Up 2-0 at the start of the second half, the Bulldogs put themselves back in the game with a goal in the 75th minute from Lihini Weerasinghe, assisted by Savannah Laursen on the play.
After both teams shot five times in the first half, Redlands outshot Cal Lutheran 11-1 in the second half as they looked to tie up the game. Kiki Bailey had other plans andwas strong in the goal for CLU, tallying seven saves in the game including four in the second half to secure the victory.
Six Regals attempted one shot in the game but no CLU player attempted at least two. Yahaira Hernandez, Kelly Morro, Olivia Leyva, and Youngdahl joined Pinal and Wardle with shots in the winning effort.
Cal Lutheran (10-4-2, 7-2-1 SCIAC) will remain on the road for a matchup against Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
