PROVIDENCE, R.I. - One day after earning their first victory of the season the Cal Lutheran men's water polo team took Division I St. Francis into halftime tied, but a late Terriers surge left the Kingsmen with a 15-7 loss to open day two of the Bruno Fall Invitational hosted by Brown. Later in the day CLU faced off with Navy, falling 13-7 to round out the day.
The first half against SFU was tight as the teams exchanged three goals in the first period and two in the second stanza. After the intermission it was all St. Francis though as the Terriers outscored the Kingsmen 10-2.
Shea Craig was the only CLU player with more than one goal as he notched two, adding a pair of field blocks at the defensive end of the pool. Both Hunter Hamaker and Mike Potter drew three ejections for the Violet and Gold and Camron Hauer recorded two.
Defensively, Nathan Ortega and goalie Jesse Owen shared a team-lead with three steals apiece while both Mike Arteaga and Max Zappas finished with two. Owen tallied six saves for the Kingsmen today in the first game.
During the final contest of the day, Cal Lutheran trailed 4-1 after the first eight minutes of action, but chipped back into the game, pulling the score within one at 5-4 entering the intermission. Unfortunately for the Kingsmen, a strong second half from Navy saw eight goals while CLU netted just three.
For the second time today Craig led the offense with two goals. Arteaga had a team-high three drawn ejections adding a pair of steals, to tie with Ortega for a the team-lead while adding an assist. Hauer, Hamaker and Zappas each contributed with a field block as well.
Owens again had a big game in front of the cage with 12 saves, notching a steal as well.
Cal Lutheran (1-7) wraps up this East Coast trip on Sunday morning with an 8:00 a.m. (PST) first sprint against MIT. Live video will be available for the tournament.
