Hackett Shines as Regals Finish Regular Season with 2-0 Win

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's soccer (13-3-2, 9-2-1 SCIAC) closed out the regular season in dominant fashion on Wednesday night, earning a 2-0 win over Whittier (4-5-4, 2-5-4 SCIAC) at William Rolland Stadium behind a standout performance from Stephenie Hackett.

The Regals came out on the attack early, controlling possession and creating several strong shots in the opening minutes. Their pressure paid off in the ninth minute when Hackett found the bottom left corner of the net to give Cal Lutheran the early lead. The goal was set up by a cross from Riley Cardenas, which reached a Whittier defender who mistakenly passed the ball directly to Hackett and provided her with a lane to shoot with.

The Regals continued to create opportunities throughout the first half, with Jessica Sprouse, Sawyer Frye, and Olivia Suarez all testing the Whittier defense, but the Poets' goalkeeper held firm to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.

Cal Lutheran maintained its momentum in the second half, continuing to dictate play and limit Whittier's looks on goal. In the 57th minute, Hackett doubled the lead with her second goal of the night, assisted by Suarez, sealing the 2-0 result. Suarez saw an open Hackett in the middle of the Whittier defense and set her up nicely. Hackett put one touch on it before blasting it to the top right of the goal from about 25 yards out.

Goalkeeper Kelsey Slaugh led a composed defensive effort, tallying three saves to secure the shutout. The Regals finished with a 21-8 advantage in total shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.

With the victory, Cal Lutheran closes the regular season with a 9-2-1 conference record, securing the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Tournament and hosting CMS in the conference semifinals on Wednesday at William Rolland Stadium.
