Regals Connect on Four Goals in Rout of Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (7-2-1, 4-1-0 SCIAC) traveled to Redlands on Wednesday evening for a conference matchup with the Bulldogs and came away with a dominant 4-1 victory. Cal Lutheran got off 30 shot attempts in a match it controlled from start to finish.

The Regals played with aggression from the opening whistle, firing off eight shots in the opening 15 minutes. Anna Evenson was able to convert on that eighth attempt as she dribbled through the Bulldogs defense, made a hesitation move, and delivered a strike with her left foot to the right side of the goal.

Up 1-0, Cal Lutheran kept applying pressure as Ellie Mauzerall found some green grass up the left side on a counterattack. She crossed it into the box, and pressure applied by Caitlyn Turner led to an own goal by Redlands (0-7-2, 0-3-1 SCIAC).

Cal Lutheran would take its 2-0 lead into the break, as the Regals outshot the Bulldogs 12-2 in the first half and starting keeper Kelsey Slaugh made one save.

Kira Kasarda would replace Slaugh in goal for the final 45 minutes.

There were offensive fireworks early in the second half. The Regals took six shots in the first seven minutes, and the Bulldogs managed one. The seventh Cal Lutheran attempt was a goal by Jessica Sprouse, as Evenson forced a giveaway deep in Redlands territory, and Sprouse was able to flip the ball over the keeper's head for the Regals' third goal of the game and her third goal of the season.

Redlands responded just one minute later to cut the deficit to 3-1.

With five minutes left, Ryan Kaneko attacked the middle of the Bulldogs defense and drew a foul, leading to a Cal Lutheran free kick with a chance for a shot on goal. Hana Sawan was called upon, and she delivered with a beautiful strike just beneath the cross bar to put the Regals up 4-1, a score that held up until the final whistle.

Evenson, Olivia Suarez, and Mia Niemela led Cal Lutheran with five shots apiece, and Sprouse contributed four shots herself. Kasarda made one save in her half of goalkeeping.

The Regals outshot the Bulldogs 30 to 5 and 12 to 3 on-goal.

Cal Lutheran will look to keep things rolling when it hosts Caltech for Senior Day tomorrow before the 1pm kickoff. The Regals will be honoring Slaugh, Suarez, Kaneko, Evenson, Brynn McMahon, Tessa French, Ashley Escamilla, and Maya Blodgett.
