Regals Magical Run Continues to Elite 8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Cal Lutheran women's soccer is advancing to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history!

For the second game in a row, Eden Quiroz scored the lone goal as the Regals secured a 1-0 win over Hardin-Simmons in the NCAA Sweet 16.

"So impressed with our focus tonight," head coach Frank Marino said. "I thought we were locked in tonight and we will need another performance like this tomorrow. I have great respect for Coach Lance Key and Hardin Simmons and congrats to them on a great season"

The Regals played with the upper hand in the first half, outshooting the Cowgirls 7-2 and earning four corner kicks. Quiroz took advantage of these opportunities, scoring off a corner kick to give the Regals a 1-0 lead. Elisa Shott and Adriana Maroney assisted the goal. Quiroz has now recorded a goal in back-to-back games coming off her game-winning goal against Pomona-Pitzer in the round of 32.

Both teams had chances to find the net in the second half, but the Regals did enough to keep their 1-0 lead until the final horn. As the Cowgirls threatened with a corner kick with 40 seconds left to play, goalkeeper Kelsey Slaugh secured the save to ice the match.

Slaugh picked up the win and is now 3-0 through 3 games in the NCAA Tournament. It is the Regals' 14th shutout of the season.

The Regals' defense was stellar in the win, recording their second shutout in a row against a Cowgirls offense that averaged more than three goals per game this season. The back four of Avery West, Savana Durr, Ally Fisicaro, and Brynn McMahon played all 90 minutes in the victory.

With the win, the Regals (18-1-4) advance to the Elite Eight where they will take on the No. 1 ranked team in the country Christopher Newport University (19-0-2) on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. PST.
