Regals Rally for 5-4 Win Over Whittier
CLU splits series with Whittier
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Today on Hutton Field, the Cal Lutheran softball team hosted Whittier for the second and final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) series of the spring between the two squads, again splitting the doubleheader with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in game two after a tough 7-0 game one loss.
Whittier owned the first game, outhitting the Regals 14-5 during the 7-0 victory. Senior hurler Courtney Sooy (6-5) worked out of second inning jam and got a pair of strike outs over the first three innings, but in the fourth frame, WC tagged CLU for a trio of runs, adding four more in the final two frames. Sooy got some help from her counterpart, Abbigael Howard, who teamed up with shortstop Antonia Rapisardi to throw out a would-be-base stealer for the second out of the second inning.
Nicole White-Madolora took the ball and threw one official pitch, forcing a groundball to shortstop, scooped by Makenna Pellerin to end the top of the seventh.
Offensively, two of the five hits came from Sooy, though she was stranded each time. Olivia Leyva, Mikaela Mayhew and Olivia Serrano each had a hit as well. Amanda Lewis, who reached on an error, was the only CLU player to make it to third base.
In the nightcap, the Regals found themselves at an early 1-0 deficit after a first inning solo homerun from Kacey Whitne. The Poets right fielder drove in another pair in the third for a 3-0 advantage.
Pellerin led off the fifth with a double and came in to score on an RBI from Mayhew, who went on to drive in two more, including the game-winner, an inning later with a double to left field. The hit scored both Lewis and Pellerin who reached on an error and a fielder’s choice, respectively. Leyva and Sooy patiently drew back-to-back walks to start the rally and two consecutive WC errors aided in the CLU comeback. Kendall Marinesi also worked a walk in the inning.
Freshman Olivia Serrano threw 5.1 strong innings despite earning a no-decision on her birthday and classmate Brittany Workman (2-2) came on in relief to earn the win, striking out three while allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings of action.
Cal Lutheran only collected six hits in game two as Mayhew went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Pellerin scored twice. Sooy, Catherine Slabaugh and Jacy Watanabe were the other hits. CLU was also active on the bases with Leyva and Pellerin each swiping one.
Defensively, CLU pitchers got some help from the field, including a great catch in centerfield from Watanabe. The Regals had two double plays in the win.
Whittier (12-16, 8-8 SCIAC) put Samantha Blum to work in both games as the pitcher went 1-1 in 8.0 total innings, a complete first game and an inning of relief in the second. Sierra Rodri finished with five hits on the day.
Cal Lutheran (10-14, 7-9) returns to action on Friday, April 14 when the Violet and Gold host Chapman for two at Hutton Field beginning at 2:00 p.m. with a second game to follow.
