WHITTIER, Calif. – After two big Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victories against Redlands yesterday, the Cal Lutheran softball team traveled to Whittier for another pair of games on Sunday afternoon. The Regals opened the day with a 10-6 win before the Poets edged CLU 3-2 in the night cap to split the doubleheader at Palmer Field.

CLU def. WC 10-6
In the first game of the afternoon, the Poets struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning before the Regals bounced back with three runs in the third. Olivia Leyva highlighted the inning with a clutch two-out, RBI double to score Amanda Lewis and Jacy Watanabe. Whittier tacked another run across in the fourth, but Leyva responded with yet another two RBI double to put CLU ahead 5-2 in the fifth. Four runs in the next two innings from the Poets made it a 6-6 game, before the Regals exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Leyva went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs while Watanabe and Makenna Pellerin also added two hits apiece to lead the Regals at the plate. Scooter Rapisardi produced three RBIs and Lewis scored three runs. Courtney Sooy (2-2) picked up the win in the circle after going 5.1 innings and Olivia Serrano pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

WC def. CLU 3-2
The Regals picked up where they left on in game number two, as Leyva came through with an RBI single in the top of the first to help CLU take an early lead. Marialena Ahern made it 2-1 Whittier in the bottom of the first with a two-run homerun and the Poets stretch the lead to 3-1 with a sac fly in the third. An RBI double from Pellerin in the sixth inning cut the deficit to one, but the Regals could not bring home the tying run and dropped their third one-run game of the young season.

Watanabe, Lewis, Pellerin, Leyva and Mikaela Mayhew provided one hit apiece for CLU in the game.

Annika Seedborg earned the win for the Poets after striking out nine Regals and pitching a complete game while allowing just one earned run and five hits.

Cal Lutheran (3-5, 3-3 SCIAC) returns to the diamond on Saturday, Mar. 11 for a doubleheader at La Verne beginning at 12:00 p.m.
