ORANGE, Calif. – The recent rains have forced the Cal Lutheran softball team from the diamond for more than two weeks. Today, the Regals were finally back in action, opening Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play at Chapman where the visiting Violet and Gold was outlasted 3-2 in eight innings and 2-1 in a walk-off at El Camino Real.

CU def. CLU 3-2 (8 innings)
The first game was scoreless through three and Cal Lutheran struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth frame. A CU error followed by an Amanda Lewis triple and an Olivia Leyva sacrifice fly gave the Regals a 2-0 advantage. Chapman cut its deficit to one on a single, stolen base and eventual sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and pushed the tying run across the plate in the next inning. Each team left one runner on base in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. Makenna Pellerin singled to lead things off, but was stranded at second after swiping the bag. The contest would conclude in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out single, walk and single to right field, which sent the winning run home.

CLU scored two runs on four hits, two of which came from Pellerin with the final one by way of pitcher Courtney Sooy (0-2). The senior hurler worked 7.2 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits with three strike outs.  Abbigael Howard connected with Antonia Rapisardi to catch a would-be-base-stealer in the bottom of the seventh. The Regals played flawless defense as eight of the nine position players recorded a putout or assist. Rapisardi led the way with two putouts and five assists.

CU def. CLU 2-1
The second game was another nail biter as the Regals again scored first. Catherine Slabaugh singled down the left field line to start the top of the second and moved around the bases, stepping on the plate for the lone scoring play of the game for Cal Lutheran. The Violet and Gold held Chapman at bay through five innings before the Panthers pushed across a run to tie things in the sixth and came back in the seventh for a two-out walkoff. CLU continued to excel in the field without an error. Mikaela Mayhew recorded five putouts with two assists in the game to lead the way. At the plate, Mayhew went 2-for-3 with Lewis and Brittany Workman each recording a hit as well. Nicole White-Madolora worked 5.1 innings before handing the ball to Workman (0-2) who was tagged with the loss. White-Madolora scattered five hits while striking out two.

Cal Lutheran (0-4, 0-2 SCIAC) is back at Hutton Field on Saturday, March 4 for a pair against Redlands in SCIAC play. Teams will take the field at noon for the first game with a second to follow.
