THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 13 Cal Lutheran baseball team stretched its streak to 14 in a row with a pair of wins over Whittier on Saturday afternoon at Ullman Stadium. In game one, the Kingsmen cruised to a 5-1 victory before a come-from-behind 7-4 victory in game two.

After the Poets scraped across a run in the first inning, the Kingsmen responded with a run of their own thanks to an RBI double to left by Jimmy Jauregui to tie the game.

Whittier loaded the bases in the third and put runners on the corners in the fourth, but starting pitcher Nate Wehner and the CLU defense escaped both jams.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jauregui got things going once again with a leadoff double to right center and came around to score on a wild pitch to give CLU a 2-1 lead.

The Kingsmen added three more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homerun off the bat of Max Weinstein, and an RBI single from Brad Fullerton to give CLU a 5-1 lead.

Wehner wrapped up the complete game with two of his eight strikeouts in the ninth inning to clinch the series win. The junior righty finished his second consecutive complete game for CLU while scattering 10 hits and allowing just one run.

At the plate, Fullerton went 3-for-3 and Jauregui finished 3-for-4 to lead the Violet and Gold while Weinstein, Austin Kay and Matt Sciumbato each tallied two hits apiece.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Poets scored two in the first and two in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.

After being held scoreless until the fifth inning, CLU finally broke through with a big four run inning to tie the game. With one out, Eddie Villegas was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a single to center by Kay. Weinstein drove in Villegas with a single through the right side and Sinjin Todd cleared the bases with a double to the right center gap. After Todd advanced to third with an error on the play, Gabe Gunter brought home Todd for the tying run with a shallow sacrifice fly to left.

Another hit batsman haunted the Poets in the seventh, as Weinstein was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score the game-winning run on a Jauregui single.

Troy Frazier (2-0) was excellent in relief, throwing 4.2 innings while striking out seven and allowing just one hit. Miguel Salud picked up his sixth save of the season, moving him into sixth all-time in CLU single-season and career history.

Offensively, Weinstein and Todd went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Weinstein and Kay scored two runs apiece.

Cal Lutheran (20-6, 12-5 SCIAC) takes a break from conference play with a road trip to the Pacific Northwest, beginning with a game against Puget Sound on Thursday, Apr. 13 at 3:00 p.m.
