Senior collects 10 hits in four games

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Announced on Monday afternoon by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Gabe Gunter of the Cal Lutheran baseball team was named Athlete of the Week based on his performance during the week of Mar. 13-19.

Gunter had an incredible week at the plate, hitting .556 (10-for-18) with five RBIs to lead the Kingsmen to a 4-0 record. The senior right fielder capped off the weekend with a bang, blasting a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 12th inning to defeat Willamette (Ore.) 9-8 in a comeback thriller on Saturday. In a doubleheader against Berry (Ga.) on Friday, Gunter collected four hits total to complete the sweep over the Vikings. On Tuesday, Gunter went 2-for-2 with a walk against Whittier. He was also strong in the field, throwing out a runner at the plate for one of his two assists and was perfect with 10 putouts.

Victoria Rose Meek (Mar. 6-12) is the most recent recipient while teammate Bailey Meyer (Feb. 20-26) and Alexa Barnes (Feb. 27 – Mar. 5), of the Regals track and field team have also been awarded this spring. In the winter, Haley Hodgson (Jan. 16-22 and Jan. 2-8) from the Regals basketball team was a two-time selection while Kyle Ferreira (Jan. 9-15) was a recent selection from the Cal Lutheran men’s basketball team. Hodgson’s teammate Sofia Cruz (Dec. 12-18) and Kingsmen basketball player Austin Cole (Dec. 12-18) were also honored along with Regals basketball player Janelle Porter (Nov. 14-20) and Kingsmen swimmer Jonah Hobbs (Nov. 14-20). In the fall, Hope Stewart (Oct. 17-23 and Sept. 5-11) and Ryley Settles  (Sept. 26 – Oct. 3 and Sept. 5-11) were two time-honorees for the Regals volleyball and soccer teams, respectively. For the Kingsmen, football players Aaron Lacombe (Oct. 10-16) and Adam Friederichsen (Sept. 26 – Oct. 3) have been honored as well as water polo player Chris Gardhouse (Sept. 12-18).

Cal Lutheran (11-6) is winners of four in a row and take on Williams (Mass.) in a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow, Mar. 21 beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Ullman Stadium.
